The Czech-UNDP Partnership for SDG’s brings innovative solution to Mekelle university.
Czech company IRCON with partnership of Yungo together with the Mekelle University created E-Geo-Library in order to gather all relevant information regarding geology, hydrogeology and water sector and keep them under one system in digital form available for all stakeholders.
This week, 14.10. to 18.10. representatives of both Czech companies together with colleagues from Geology department and ICT Directorate successfully uploaded the new IT platform E-Geo Library on the university server and provided necessary trainings. The output of their work was presented to the several directorates with presence of vice presidents, management of the university and other stakeholders on the conference at Mekelle University held on 17.10.2024.
“The E-Geo-Library is a new IT platform for centralized data storage, facilitating collaboration in data sharing and providing a user-friendly environment for searching among data based on keywords, abstracts, authors, as well as geospatial information.
Along with the document management system (DMS), a spatial extension is introduced to address documents to geographical coordinates or regional units. A customized map viewer uses the spatially indexed data to display the library content as thematic map layers. The interactive map viewer not only provides a better overview of the stored data, but also offer a graphical interface for combining with multiple datasets shared by other partners and institutions.” says Tomas Kafka.

“This way the E-Geo-Library is bringing a unique and innovative solution and turns a standard document repository into an interactive application. The whole system is hosted on the MU server accessible via MU websites from where we encourage MU staff, students, and partners to explore and further collaborate in the use, collection and sharing of data. We believe this is an ideal solution for the practical use of geosciences and using such data in this IT platform can contribute to connection with other universities or partners abroad” according to Dr. Ermias Hagos from Department of Geology.
The project is funded by UNDP under the Czech-UNDP Challenge fund.
