Overview

The ICT Directorate of Mekelle University plays a pivotal role in enabling the digital transformation of the university. Since its humble beginnings in 2002 with just two staff members and a few desktop computers, the Directorate has evolved into the backbone of the university's operations—supporting core functions like Teaching-Learning, Research, and Community Services.

Today, ICT is at the heart of nearly all university activities, and the Directorate is committed to building a modern, secure, and inclusive digital environment for the entire Mekelle University community.

Our Core Focus Areas

1. ICT Infrastructure Development

  • Campus Connectivity: All 6 campuses of Mekelle University are interconnected via high-speed fiber optic networks.

  • Tier-III Data Center: The ICT Directorate operates a state-of-the-art Tier-III certified data center that ensures:

    • 24/7 high availability (99.982% uptime)

    • Redundant power and cooling systems

    • High scalability and security

  • Enterprise Network Backbone: Backbone switches, firewalls, core routers, and wireless infrastructure installed to serve thousands of users with seamless access.

2. Digital Transformation & Automation

The Directorate has led the successful automation of numerous university workflows by developing and deploying systems such as:

  • Student Lifecycle Management System

  • Procurement Management System

  • Financial Management System

  • Property Management System

  • eHRM (Electronic Human Resource Management)

  • eFleet (Fleet and Vehicle Tracking System)

  • Research Management System

These platforms have replaced traditional paperwork-based operations and created a digital work environment that improves efficiency, transparency, and accountability.

  • eLearning & Moodle Integration: Supporting online education with a robust Moodle-based platform used for digital exams, resources, and blended learning.

  • Digital Library & eLibrary Systems: University-wide access to online resources, journals, and digitized materials.

  • ICT Helpdesk & e-Ticketing System: Automated request handling system for ICT support.

  • Web & Application Hosting: Hosting for departmental websites, research projects, and online platforms.

  • Cybersecurity & Data Backup: Regular backups, endpoint protection, and security protocols to ensure data integrity.


Collaboration & Capacity Building

  • The ICT Directorate works closely with national and international partners.

  • Staff have received advanced training from recognized institutions to stay current in areas such as networking, cloud computing, software development, and information security.

  • The team has successfully hosted and supported nationwide digital services like national entrance exams, online conferences, and open journal platforms.
