MA program in Federalism and Governance Studies

Overview

The MA program in Federalism and Governance Studies at Mekelle University aims to cultivate experts in the relationship between federalism and governance, addressing Ethiopia's multicultural context. Established to foster a deep understanding of the compatibility between these two areas, the program responds to the challenges posed by Ethiopia's unique federal system, which emerged post-1991 to affirm self-administration rights for diverse nations and nationalities. The curriculum emphasizes decentralized governance, democratic developmental states, and the politics of identity, aiming to promote unity in diversity. It also prioritizes multicultural education as a key component, recognizing its critical role in implementing effective federalism. By integrating these themes, the program aspires to contribute to peace, democracy, and development in Ethiopia while enhancing the study of political science, law, and governance in the Horn of Africa and beyond.
