Successful Completion of the Annual Research Review Day at Mekelle University After a Three-Year Interruption Due to War
Following the fruitful consultative workshop on the state of MU journals and externally funded projects held on November
27, 2024, Mekelle University’s Annual Research Review Day 2024 has successfully concluded marking a significant return
after a three-year interruption due to war. This event brought together researchers from various universities and research
institutions, scholars, and potential partners, fostering collaboration and innovation during this time of rebuilding and
renewal.

The Research Review Day commenced with welcoming remarks from Dr. Eyasu Yazew, MU Vice President for Research and Community
Engagement (VPRCE). The event opened with an insightful and inspiring speech by Prof. Kindeya G. Hiwet, Head of the Cabinet
Secretariat for Transformation and Social Development, TIRA, Member of the Governing Board of MU, and former president of
Mekelle University, who has made a lasting impact on the institution. In his speech, Prof. Kindeya urged researchers,
students, policymakers, and community leaders to collaborate in transforming Tigray’s food systems.
Furthermore, a powerful keynote address was delivered by Dr. Eyasu Abreha, Head of the Tigray Bureau of Agriculture and
Natural Resources, a prominent figure in agricultural research and policy in Ethiopia. Dr. Eyasu emphasized that the MU
academic community plays a crucial role in rebuilding war-affected Tigray by modernizing agricultural practices and
contributing expertise in agriculture and its infrastructure to support sustainable recovery and resilience.

Oral and poster presentations, as well as the showcasing of prototypes, continued in the afternoon. Participants engaged in
research presentations across three parallel sessions, covering a wide range of topics including Life Sciences and
Agriculture, Physical Sciences and Engineering, and Social Sciences and Humanities.
