Mekelle University has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Bamenda, Cameroon, to strengthen collaboration in climate research, institutional capacity building, and climate adaptation.
The agreement was signed following an Institutional Experience-Sharing and Peer-Learning Visit held from 31 August to 3 September 2026. The University of Bamenda delegation was represented by Dr. Lionel Takem Nkwanyang from the Department of Geology, Mining and Environmental Science. The visit was organized under the CO-CAT (Climate Adaptation Research-Focused Organisational Capacity Assessment Tool) Project of Mekelle University's Institute of Climate and Society.
During the visit, the delegation held discussions with Mekelle University's Vice President for Research and Community Engagement, as well as directors and researchers from the Institute of Climate and Society and the College of Dryland Agriculture and Natural Resources. The discussions focused on institutional experiences, climate research capacity, resource mobilization, and opportunities for collaboration in climate modelling, prediction, and adaptation.
Under the MoU, Mekelle University's Institute of Climate and Society and the University of Bamenda's Department of Geology, Mining and Environmental Science will collaborate on joint research, staff and student exchange, scientific publications, collaborative funding proposals, workshops, and training activities.
The partnership marks an important step in strengthening Africa-to-Africa institutional collaboration and advancing research and knowledge exchange to address the growing challenges of climate change and adaptation.
