In collaboration with Save the Children and Mekelle University, College Law and Governance Human Rights Center, organized a one-day Advocacy Workshop on the Right of Children to Education in the Tigray Region on September 24, 2024. During this workshop, three papers were presented: “Rejuvenating the Rights of Children to Education in the Tigray Region” by Mr. Gebremeskel Hailu (Associate Professor), “Promoting the Protection of Children from All Forms of Violence in the Tigray Region” by Mr. Abreha Mesele (Assistant Professor), and “Enhancing the Protection of Child Returnees and IDPs in the Tigray Region” by Mr. Awet H/zgi (Assistant Professor).
The first presenter discussed the impact of war on children's rights to education in Tigray, highlighting the extensive destruction of schools across the region. The damage to school buildings, facilities, and educational materials has severely compromised children's right to education. The second presenter addressed how children's rights to education, particularly for girls, have been affected during both the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing conflict. The third presenter emphasized the necessity of enhancing protections for child returnees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) concerning their educational rights.
Participants from various sectors in Tigray, including education and social affairs, engaged in discussions about advancing children's right to education in the region. Following a series of discussions, they outlined action points aimed at facilitating children's return to school and enhancing their educational rights in Tigray.
