We are delighted to announce that Mekelle University has successfully developed and released THREE new variety.
Official Release!
The National Variety Release Standing Committee , under the Ethiopian Agricultural Authority decided for the release THREE innovative varieties developed by Mekelle university scientists and researchers.
What makes the new varieties special?
• The commonly called "kuchnia" diseas on cacutus plant has been identified as one of the most destructive diseases affecting food securty of the public. Now, MU's scientists and researchers have developed two Cactus Pear varieties which are resistant to Cochineal insect pests, namely, 2 X-05/PARL 262 and X-11.
• In addition, a new Barley variety called Hidat is released. This is drought tolerant, early maturing and a high yielding variety.
What does this mean?
This variety is now cleared for *mass production and commercialization throught out Ethiopia. This achievement will undoubtedly benefit farmers, consumers, and the entire agricultural value chain.
