Veterinary Science in Ethiopia has a rich history that signifies the country's commitment to the development of veterinary medicine. In 1979, the first veterinary faculty was established at Debre-Zeit, marking a significant milestone in the country's education system. For over two decades, this institution stood as the sole provider of veterinary education in Ethiopia.
However, recognizing the growing need for skilled veterinarians to facilitate the export of essential commodities like meat, hides, and skins, the government took a proactive step. In 2003, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Mekelle University was established. This decision was driven by the government's emphasis on the importance of having a larger pool of trained professionals to support the country's trade relationships.
Since its inception, the College of Veterinary Sciences at Mekelle University has played a pivotal role in addressing the escalating demand for competent veterinary graduates. Through its academic programs, research initiatives, and practical training, the college has been instrumental in producing a new generation of skilled professionals who are equipped to meet the evolving challenges in the field of veterinary medicine.
The journey of the College of Veterinary Sciences reflects Ethiopia's commitment to enhancing veterinary education and contributing to the sustainable development of its agricultural sector. By nurturing talent, fostering innovation, and fostering collaboration, the college continues to make significant strides in advancing the standards of veterinary care and promoting the welfare of both animals and humans.
